How to grow the earliest lettuce around!

The use of clear plastic tunnels can allow you to produce lettuce up to two weeks earlier than normal. All you have to do is plant lettuce transplants at the normal spacing (approx. 9-12 inches depending on variety) apart. Next stick wire hoops over the row of lettuce. Normally three rows will be planted together. Then simply unroll some clear plastic mulch over the top of the wire hoops and bury the edges. Poke a few holes for ventilation, and watch your lettuce grow. You have basically made a miniature greenhouse around your lettuce plants. The tunnels should be remove about three weeks after planting, or when lettuce is large enough that it touches the plastic.
